Checking Ted Cruz on the facts in New Hampshire

By Louis Jacobson
February 3, 2016

One way of assessing what Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, winner of Iowa’s Republican presidential caucuses, told a New Hampshire crowd today: False-Mostly True-Mostly False-Mostly True-True-Half True.

Of course, that’s way too shorthand for how PolitiFact senior writer Lou Jacobson tracked what Cruz got factually right or wrong in his stumping this morning. (Jacobson just may have been a student at Princeton with Cruz.)

Jacobson, who attended Cruz’s event at New England College in Henniker, points out that it’s False, for starters, that raising the minimum wage leads to job losses.

But it’s Mostly True, as Cruz said, that the U.S. is at its highest level of inequality than at any time since the late 1920s and Cruz this morning made a True claim about the wealthiest U.S. counties being around Washington, D.C.

Then again, it’s Mostly False that  satellite data shows “no significant warming” of the planet over the past 18 years. And despite Cruz’s insistence, it’s only Half True that former Attorney General Eric Holder said he viewed his mission as brainwashing the American people against guns. Holder used that word when he had a different job with a focus on minority youth involved in drug crimes around the District of Columbia.

See Jacobson’s full recap  of Cruz’s remarks on Medium.com.
