High 5: The Hillz and The Donald were the clickiest

By Tom Kertscher
August 1, 2016

So, did an item about Hillary Clinton or one about Donald Trump get the most page-views at PolitiFact Wisconsin during July 2016?

It was a tremendously busy month, of course, for both presidential candidates, given that they were nominated at their respective party conventions.

But our query is a bit of a trick question.

An item about Clinton got the most clicks during the month, even though it was published in April  2015 (you can thank sharing on social media for that). Meanwhile, an item about Trump, actually published during the month, came in second.

Here’s a rundown on those two items, and the rest of the High Five for the month.

1. Hillary Clinton took money from the kings of four countries, GOP chief Reince Priebus says

The monarchies of Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Oman had contributed to the Clinton family foundation. But when we published item, Yemen, which does not have a king, had not.

And although the claim by Priebus was made during a discussion of the foundation as well as contributions to political candidates, the Wisconsinite’s phrasing could have left the impression that Clinton herself, rather than the foundation, received the money.

Our rating: Half True.

2. What Ruth Bader Ginsburg said about Donald Trump

Our In Context article fleshed out the critical remarks about Trump that were made by U.S. Supreme Court justice and which which led Wisconsinite and House Speaker Paul Ryan to call Ginsburg biased.

3. Paul Ryan claims the U.S. is the ‘oldest democracy’ in the world. Is he right?

While the United States is not the first to include elements of democracy, it is the oldest existing nation with a constitutional government in which the people elect their own government and representatives.

Our rating: True.

4. GOP Rep. Sean Duffy exaggerates role of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton on federal debt

As the Republican Wisconsin congressman said, the total federal debt is at $19 trillion. But most of it was amassed before Obama took office. And many factors — Congress, the economy and Obama himself, but to almost no extent Clinton — played a role in the debt increases during Obama’s tenure.

Our rating: Mostly False.

5. Is it true Republicans haven’t won presidential race since 1928 without a Bush or Nixon?

This item, posted in January 2015, also found new life.

The claim, which made the rounds on social media, was that since 1928, the Republican Party had not won a presidential election without either a member of the Bush family or Richard M. Nixon on the GOP ticket.

Our rating: True.
