Fact-checking Gov. Chris Christie on health care

By Erin O'Neill
August 30, 2012

Gov. Chris Christie painted Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney as a real leader who will be honest with America, even when it’s difficult.

During Christie’s keynote address at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday night, he said: “Mitt Romney will tell us the hard truths we need to hear to end the debacle of putting the world’s greatest health care system in the hands of federal bureaucrats and putting those bureaucrats between an American citizen and her doctor.”

PolitiFact New Jersey tested two of the claims within that statement in separate Truth-O-Meter items.

Christie said the United States has the “world’s greatest health care system.” We found that statement to be Half True. Read the full analysis here.

We also fact-checked Christie’s statement that the national health care law puts federal “bureaucrats between an American citizen and her doctor.” That statement landed at False on the Truth-O-Meter. Read the full analysis here.
