Sunday shows will feature military cuts, Oscars

Proposed military cuts and foreign relations are poised to dominate the political talk shows Sunday, though there will be some allusions to the mega television event later in the evening: the 86th annual Academy Awards.

CBS’ Face the Nation has an interview with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. He’s going to talk about the chaos in Ukraine, leaving Afghanistan and the budget cuts, according to host Bob Schieffer’s preview.

Over on NBC’s Meet the Press, Sens. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., and Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., will analyze possible effects of the military cuts. The show also touts an exclusive with California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat in his third term of office and is seeking another.

And Fox News Sunday brings in politicians with budgetary credentials — Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. — to discuss Obama’s 2015 budget ahead of its Tuesday release.

ABC’s This Week  injects a bit of Hollywood into its lineup, bringing in Oscar-winning star Ben Affleck to talk about his Eastern Congo Initiative that helps local economic development projects in the west African country. Affleck testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this week about that effort, as comedian and actor Seth Rogen joined another Senate committee to talk about Alzheimer’s disease.

Also joining This Week is FiveThirtyEight.com editor-in-chief Nate Silver. Silver will analyze “what it takes to build an Academy Award Best Picture winner,” ABC says.

Not everything will be budget or star-centric.

CNN’s State of the Union will talk with former Gov. Rick Santorum, R-Penn., about the tea party movement as it turns five, same-sex marriage, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and “women’s place in conservative politics.”

Also appearing on CNN are Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and former U.S. ambassador to Russia John Beyrle to talk about the Ukrainian uprising and what it means for U.S.-Russia relations.

Fox News Sunday will tackle IRS transparency legislation with Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who this week asked IRS official Lois Lerner to reappear before his House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.
