Republican Donald Trump won the presidency against a woman candidate for the second time, reigniting conversations about gender and politics. But Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., didn’t say a news outlet asked her to resign because Trump’s election had worsened American sexism, as social media users claimed.

“Now that Trump is elected, we are already seeing massive inflows of racism, homophobia, and sexism flooding social media. For example, a conservative news outlet on Instagram @TotalNews has already called for my resignation due to my gender identity. Sexist,” a screenshot from what appeared to be Ocasio-Cortez’s X account on a Nov. 25 Instagram post  said.

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

The screenshot’s handle, @AOCpressTWO, labels itself as a parody account on X. This post does not appear on the parody account.

The Instagram post has no disclaimer that it’s satirical, and many users thought it was real.

“AOC once again, lying her a— off,” one commenter said. “It’s not your gender … it’s the ridiculous crap that spews from your lips,” another said.

Not only does Ocasio-Cortez’s purported tweet not appear on the parody account, but it also does not show up on her official X accounts. We could find no news reports of Ocasio-Cortez making such a statement. The post may have been fabricated to promote the Instagram account @TotalNews, which shares conservative news.

We rate the claim that Ocasio-Cortez posted that a conservative media outlet on Instagram called for her resignation because of her gender False.
