Fake image shows Donald Trump donating $1,300 check to hurricane relief

Experts estimated that Hurricanes Helene and Milton could each cost the federal government $50 billion. Some social media posts claimed former President Donald Trump pledged to contribute a scant amount towards the damages.

“TRUMP DONATING $1300 FOR HURRICANE RELIEF,” reads what looks like a Fox News chyron shared Oct. 14 on Instagram with a photo of Trump holding a check for that amount.

But the photo is not from a real Fox News report. It was not on Fox News’ website, and a network spokesperson told PolitiFact in an email, “I can confirm this was not reported on FOX News.”

Fox News did report that a GoFundMe page launched by Trump’s campaign raised more than $1 million for Hurricane Helene. As of Oct. 17, the GoFundMe page has raised $7.7 million.

The earliest version of the image we found was posted Oct. 13 to Reddit with a parody headline. The photo has telltale signs of being artificially generated, including incoherent text on the check.
