U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the former House speaker, used a walker as she arrived for Congress’ Jan. 6 joint session to certify the 2024 presidential election. 

But a video appearing to show her falling is fabricated. A Jan. 6 Instagram post sharing the video was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

The video begins with an authentic image of Pelosi as she’s greeted after arriving for the joint session. It then appears to show her falling. 

Credible footage and photos of Pelosi arriving at the Capitol don’t show her falling. This video, meanwhile, appears to show a shapeshifter: Her face suddenly appears different, and her shoes are at one point black and another, white.
