Parody account pans U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene; she didn’t post this about Obama on X

An image of an exchange on X appears to show U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., bemoaning the end of the United States and blaming a former president.

“Who else thinks the downfall of America started with Barack Obama?” read the message that appears to come from Greene’s verified account.

“Oh, oh, I know this one!,” an account called “Four Seasons Total Landscaping” said in response. “Racists. It’s racists, isn’t it?”

A Sept. 13 Instagram post sharing this image was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

Greene didn’t post this on X. Close readers might notice that the name in the X post — “Marjorie Taylor Greene … ” — is cut off. That detail is critical to untangling what happened here.

The verified account — “Marjorie Taylor Greene Press Release (Parody)” — posted the message about Obama on Aug. 20. The account’s handle, @MTGrepp, is similar but not the same as one of Greene’s own verified handles, @RepMTG. The statement in the Instagram post didn’t appear on that account or Greene’s other verified account, @mtgreenee, as of Sept. 17, and we found no credible news coverage to suggest she posted the statement and then deleted it.

Four Seasons Total Landscaping is also a self-described “parody account,” and a reference to Rudy Giuliani’s post-2020 election press conference to benefit then-President Donald Trump.  (Giuliani, a former New York City mayor, was once one of Trump’s lawyers.)

In 2020, Greene called Obama “the most corrupt president in the history of America,” but we found no evidence she said he started the downfall of America. We rate claims she posted that on X False.
