No, Land O’Lakes isn’t bringing back its old logo

  • This claim originated on a self-described satire site. We found no evidence the dairy company is bringing back its old logo.

In 2020, Land O’Lakes, a Minnesota-based dairy company, updated its longtime logo to remove an Indigenous woman. But a recent Facebook post claims more than four years later, it’s coming back.

“Land O Lakes has announced the return of the iconic squaw to its packaging!” an Oct. 22 Facebook post said. “‘Our customers made it clear that they respect tradition more than wokeness.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads.)

The company didn’t immediately respond to PolitiFact’s questions about the post. But as of Oct. 24, we found no press releases on the company’s website making such an announcement. The statement attributed to the company also doesn’t appear on its site. And we found no credible evidence, such as news coverage, to corroborate the claim that the old logo is returning.

We did find the claim posted Oct. 21 on a Facebook account that describes its content as satire, America’s Last Line of Defense.

“Land O Lakes has announced the return of the iconic squaw to its packaging!” the post said. “And they said boycotts don’t work!”

The post is similar to other “parody” posts the account recently shared, including the purported return of other controversial food brand logos — Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben’s — that were dropped in 2020 when some companies retired racial imagery following the police killing of George Floyd and other Black Americans, The Associated Press reported.

We rate claims Land O’Lakes is bringing back its logo with an Indigenous woman False.
