No evidence that Marjorie Taylor Greene repeated Hitler quote about Christianity

If your time is short

  • We found no evidence that Marjorie Taylor Greene in 2022 made the same statement as Adolf Hitler in 1928. Her spokesperson has said the claim is false.

Nazi leader Adolf Hitler once described his totalitarian regime as Christian, but claims that U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., echoed his words lack evidence.

“We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the ideas of Christianity. Our movement is Christian,” reads a quote attributed to Hitler on Oct. 27, 1928, and shared in  a recent Instagram post.

The post claims that Greene said the same thing in July.

This post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

In the book “The Holy Reich: Nazi Conceptions of Christianity, 1919-1945,” historian Richard Steigman-Gall noted that Hitler in an Oct. 27, 1928, speech in Passau, Germany, said, “We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the idea of Christianity … in fact our movement is Christian.”

We couldn’t find a similar citation to corroborate the claim that Greene also said this.

A spokesperson for Greene told Reuters in August that the claim Greene made this statement is “absolutely fake.”

The statement doesn’t show up in her personal Twitter account nor in the account for her congressional office. It’s also not listed in the deleted tweets from those accounts tracked by ProPublica.

A Nexis news archive search of Greene and that statement also yielded no results.

But among the news articles were comparisons of Hitler’s words to comments Greene made July 23, 2022, during an interview with Next News Network while she was attending the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Florida.

“We need to be the party of nationalism, and I’m a Christian and I say it proudly,” Greene said. “We should be Christian nationalists.”

A columnist for The Daily Herald in Everett, Washington, for example, opined that Greene was “merely paraphrasing Adolf Hitler.”

Claims that she repeated the exact same words as Hitler are False.
