In-N-Out Burger has recently drawn news coverage as restaurants have refused to comply with COVID-19 vaccine mandates in California. But an image of the bottom of one of the chain’s cups does not really say “F— Joe Biden,” as it appears in a recent Facebook post

This post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)

In-N-Out Burger didn’t immediately respond to PolitiFact’s questions about the image but a reverse image search of the photo shows that the original picture features the Bible verse John 3:16. It was posted on Flickr in 2011.

The reverse image search also turns up other doctored images of In-N-Out cups. Snopes has fact-checked two others: one image in 2015 that made it look like the cup said “Hail Satan,” and another in 2019 that said “Epstein did not kill himself.”

That year, the chain’s CEO said in an interview that her uncle had put Bible verses on In-N-Out’s cups and wrappers in the early 1990s. In addition to John 3:16 on the soda cup, the milkshake cup features Proverbs 3:5 and the burger wrappers have Revelation 3:20.

In-N-Out has also addressed questions about the cups on its Facebook page. In response to someone asking in 2016 if its cups “seriously say hail Satan on the rim on the bottom,” the verified In-N-Out Burger account replied and said, “This is a hoax and not something we printed on our cups.”

This is also a hoax. We rate claims that In-N-Out cups insult Biden False.
