“Biden agrees to Pelosi’s request to resign.”

Pants on Fire!

Joe Biden isn’t resigning, and Nancy Pelosi didn’t ask him to

If your time is short

This is a fabricated claim.

See the sources for this fact-check

It is not true that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., requested President Joe Biden’s resignation, and Biden hasn’t resigned either. That’s a made-up claim circulating on Facebook.

“Biden agrees to Pelosi’s request to resign, Trump’s comeback is full of cheers,” said the caption for a May 25 Facebook post.

This post was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.)

The post includes a 42-minute long video from One America News Network’s May 25 morning newscast. The newscast does not mention the false claim about Pelosi and Biden. It covers a range of other topics, including a new Florida law on social media companies, COVID-19 restrictions lifting across the country, and poll results about Republican voters rejecting Biden as the legitimate president.

We found no legitimate reports about Pelosi calling for Biden’s resignation — it would be major global news if she had. Her recent statements applaud Biden’s policies and proposals.

On the day the Facebook post appeared, Pelosi was commending Biden’s Build Back Better campaign message and a proposal he announced in April for federal investment in education, child care and paid leave.

“The American Families Plan makes transformational investments in education, adding two years of free early childhood education and two years of free community college. Because every child deserves an equal chance to succeed. #BuildBackBetter,” Pelosi tweeted.

Biden’s ongoing presidential schedule is additional evidence that he has not resigned or agreed to do so. On May 25, Biden met privately with George Floyd’s family at the White House. He spoke to reporters about it later that day.

In January, a false claim alleged that Biden was stepping down as president-elect. That claim traced back to a website that had a picture of a clown and the words “You got owned!” and “You’ve been pranked!”

Our ruling
