The Republican candidates for lieutenant governor faced questions on border security, abortion, education and other key topics in Monday night’s debate hosted by KERA-TV, Channel 13 in Dallas.

Some of their answers touched on claims we’ve checked before:

• Nov. 14, 2012 — Dan Patrick: Says the state of Texas rates as “unacceptable” almost 500 of the state’s 8,000 public schools. — True

• Sept. 26, 2013 — David Dewhurst: “I’ve been reducing the number of Democratic” Texas Senate committee “chairs since I came in” as lieutenant governor. — Mostly False

• Oct. 9, 2013 — Dan Patrick: I am “the only candidate for lieutenant governor to oppose in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.” — False
