Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and the Truth-O-Meter

By Bill Adair
February 22, 2013

Ted Cruz has been in the U.S. Senate just two months, but the Texas Republican has already generated controversy for his remarks on Chuck Hagel, President Barack Obama’s nominee for defense secretary.

PolitiFact Texas has been fact-checking Cruz since he began running for the Senate in 2011.

He’s been checked 12 times and earned a mixed record on the Truth-O-Meter — three Mostly Trues, three Half Trues, three Falses and three Pants on Fires.

Some of the recent fact-checks:

A Pants on Fire for his claim that Hagel’s nomination as defense secretary “has been publicly celebrated by the Iranian government.”

A Half True for Cruz’s claim that he “has repeatedly praised Chuck Hagel’s character, patriotism, bravery, and personal service defending our nation.”

A False for his claim that “the jurisdictions with the strictest gun control laws, almost without exception … have the highest crime rates and the highest murder rates.”

To keep up with future fact-checks on Cruz, check out PolitiFact Texas.
