Prayer not restricted at Houston National Cemetery

By Sue Owen
August 6, 2013

Conservative group ForAmerica created a catchy graphic that’s been shared more than 18,000 times on Facebook. The only problem is it’s False: The Houston National Cemetery is not restricting Christian prayers.

Similar allegations in 2011 resulted in legal action, when a pastor and Houston volunteer groups said a cemetery official told them not to refer to Christianity in services at the cemetery. Those claims were resolved with a judge’s order letting the pastor speak as he had planned and by a lawsuit settlement in which the Department of Veterans Affairs did not admit fault.

Leaders at the volunteer groups and the cemetery told us there have been no problems since, and there are no religious restrictions. Read on for details.
