Fact-checking that spans the globe

By Angie Drobnic Holan
September 25, 2012

The United Nations General Assembly is meeting in New York this week, which made foreign policy the topic of the day on the campaign trail.

We’ve fact-checked several claims about foreign policy this week.

The Romney campaign repeated the charge that President Barack Obama hasn’t supported Israel enough. Romney campaign surrogate Adam Hasner, a Florida Republican running for Congress, said that “President Obama decided not to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York.” We looked into Hasner’s claim and found that Obama did pass up on a chance to meet with Netanyahu, due to a scheduling conflict. We rated Hasner’s statement Mostly True.

Americans for Tax Reform, the anti-tax group run by Grover Norquist, charged in a campaign mailer that Obama sent $450 million to China to build a wind farm in Texas. There are no facts to back up the charge; an idea for a wind farm never happened. We rated their claim Pants on Fire.

Secure America Now, a super PAC concerned with national security, said that Obama adviser David Plouffe took “large piles of cash” from a joint venture partner of a company owned by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. We looked into the details and found that Plouffe did accept speaking fees from a joint venture. We rated the claim Mostly True.
