Texas testing 1, 2, 3

By W. Gardner Selby
December 17, 2012

Thomas Ratliff, a Republican member of the State Board of Education, wishes Texas state government imposed less testing on students.

To buttress his case, Ratliff wrote in an Austin American-Statesman opinion piece: “Massachusetts, the envy of all public school systems in the United States, has three state-mandated tests. Finland, which is the envy of all public school systems in the world, has one. That’s right, one.”

We’d looked before at flawed claims about the extent of student testing in Texas. This round, Ratliff’s statement graded out at Half True, in part because the single exam required of students to graduate from secondary school in Finland comprises at least four separate tests.

Test out all of our student-testing fact-checks to the right.
