Gingrich repeats Half True “food stamp” claim

By Willoughby Mariano
June 24, 2011

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich keeps on calling President Barack Obama the “food stamp president.”

Never mind that the Truth-O-Meter rated this label Half True in May.

PolitiFact first rated the phrase when the Republican candidate for president used it May 15 on NBC’s Meet the Press. He repeated it June 16 in his speech at the Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans.

Gingrich was at it again Wednesday in his speech to the Atlanta Press Club, so PolitiFact Georgia quickly posted a gentle reminder that the sound bite was Half True.

Still, he recycled it Thursday night in an address to Maryland Republicans.
