Republicans go after AARP with Medicare attacks

By Angie Drobnic Holan
September 30, 2009

The health care reform debate has been contentious enough that even a group like the AARP — a nonprofit advocacy group for seniors — will come under the gun of political attacks.

We’ve checked two items concerning AARP.

Republican Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite of Florida said that AARP is “the largest reseller of insurance in the country” and “has a vested interest in seeing that the market for reselling supplemental insurance expands.” We rated her statement on

AARP and its insurance ties

Half True.

The Republican House Conference said that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had different standards on communications with seniors when it came to AARP and Humana, a private insurance company. We found that

Humana and AARP

have different relationships with Medicare beneficiaries and rated the claim False.
