Read indictment of Donald Trump in the special counsel’s 2020 election, Jan. 6 investigation

By PolitiFact Staff
August 1, 2023

Former President Donald Trump has been charged four times in a federal indictment by a grand jury investigating efforts to overturn the 2020 election results leading up to Jan. 6, 2021.

The charges are:

  • one count conspiracy to defraud the United States;

  • one count conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding;

  • one count obstruction of and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding;

  • and one count conspiracy against rights.

There are six unnamed co-conspirators listed in the indictment.

This is the third indictment brought against Trump in 2023, and the second federal indictment. In April, Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony charges of falsifying business records brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Trump was also charged in a federal grand jury indictment related to the mishandling of classified documents. The charges were brought by Justice Department Special Counsel Jack Smith, who also investigated Trump’s efforts to overturn legitimate 2020 election results.
