Celia Israel claim about Trump’s hats was 10th most-clicked fact check from 2016

By W. Gardner Selby
December 26, 2016

A fiery claim about Donald Trump caught the Texas Truth-O-Meter on fire.

The fact check also proved to be our No. 10 most-clicked article from the year.

Exhorting fellow Democrats, state Rep. Celia Israel of Austin declared that Texas voters wouldn’t forget the Republican presidential nominee’s vows to build a wall on the border and to round up and deport people living here without legal authorization.

“Your words are cheap, Mr. Trump,” Israel said, “as cheap as the made-in-China gimme caps that proclaim that you will make America great again.”

Hold on; PunditFact in October 2015 found incorrect and ridiculous tweets claiming that Trump’s “Make America Great Again” caps were made in China. Snopes.com reached a similar conclusion; the campaign hats were made in California, each organization found, with knockoffs sewn elsewhere.

Similarly, we found no factual basis for the China caps claim.

PANTS ON FIRE!
