Republican presidential candidates, their latest muffs and misstatements

In a hurry? Hustle to PolitiFact’s Fox News debate coverage here.

Heading into the debate, we wondered what the Republican candidates have lately muffed or misrepresented.

Austin-born Carly Fiorina got it wrong when she said abortions are increasing, PolitiFact reports.

Separately, PolitiFact Virginia concluded an abortion rights advocate got it wrong when she said more than 100,000 Texas women had tried to self-induce abortions this past year.

Canada-born but Houston-reared Ted Cruz of Texas misquoted Dianne Feinstein about rounding up America’s guns, PolitiFact California notes.

We rated Mostly True, meantime, a claim by Marco Rubio about the reach of Cruz’s proposed flat tax.

PolitiFact Iowa in December found Mostly False this Cruz claim: “The Democrats in the Senate last year introduced a constitutional amendment to repeal the free speech protections of the First Amendment.” The proposal in question would allow legislators to regulate fundraising and campaign spending. Constitutional scholars advise the amendment would have a limited or nonexistent effect on speech rights.

Donald Trump got it wrong, PolitiFact Florida finds, when he said Mexico can afford the border wall he promises thanks to our trade deficit with that southern neighbor; one doesn’t relate to the other.

PolitiFact Wisconsin hasn’t lately checked a presidential hopeful; Scott Walker bowed out, after all. In December, though, its researchers found True House Speaker Paul Ryan’s claim the U.S. “tax rate on successful small businesses is 44.6 percent,” while the business tax rate in Canada is 15 percent.

Likewise, PolitiFact Georgia has lately kept its focus on claims in that state. What caught our attention: That crew rated Mostly True a federal claim Georgia “has the (nation’s) highest flu activity.”

So, what’s got you wondering?

Here’s our look into Ted Cruz’s factually flawed TV ad about Donald TrumpCruz’s full Truth-O-Meter report card is here.

See the False claim about self-induced abortions in Texas as analyzed by PolitiFact Virginia.

Carly Fiorina’s FALSE from PolitiFact California for saying abortions are increasing.

Fiorina is indeed an Austin native.

Cruz was born in Canada, but largely raised in Houston. Here’s the PolitiFact California check of his flawed claim about rounding up Americans’ guns.

Marco Rubio merited a Mostly True, we found, for his claim that Cruz’s tax plan applies to profits and payroll.

Donald Trump got it wrong, PolitiFact Florida finds, when he said Mexico can afford the border wall he promises thanks to its trade deficit with the U.S.

PolitiFact Iowa in December found Mostly False this Cruz claim: "The Democrats in the Senate last year introduced a constitutional amendment to repeal the free speech protections of the First Amendment."

Not presidential, still interesting: PolitiFact Wisconsin found True a claim by House Speaker Paul Ryan comparing tax rates levied on small businesses in the U.S. versus rates on such businesses in Canada.

And from PolitiFact Georgia, it’s Mostly True that state has the country’s highest flu activity.
