Patrick, Castro spar over immigration in San Antonio

By W. Gardner Selby
April 15, 2014

Viewable online and on Univision, Dan Patrick and Julián Castro faced off over immigration this week.

Their 6 p.m. Tuesday showdown in San Antonio, moderated by Evan Smith of the Texas Tribune, gave each Texan a chance to build on his mixed Truth-O-Meter report card. (To see how we tracked it, peek at our Twitter posts; we’re @PolitiFactTexas).

Our past fact checks of each of these Texans are stacked to the right.

We’ve checked six claims by Castro, the mayor of San Antonio who keynoted the 2012 Democratic National Convention. His worst ratings: Half Trues for a flawed claim about Mitt Romney and another about Gov. Rick Perry.

We’ve gauged nine declarations by Dan Patrick, the Houston state senator seeking the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor. He’s in a May 27 runoff with incumbent David Dewhurst.

Patrick’s worst rating, of False, came after he said in an October video ad that he was the “only candidate for lieutenant governor to oppose in-state tuition for illegal immigrants.”

See Castro’s full Truth-O-Meter report card here. Peruse Patrick’s report card here.

And write us if you hear a claim we should check.
