As Holder targets Texas law, a look at our voter ID checks

By Sue Owen
July 25, 2013

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday in Philadelphia that he will ask a federal court to step in and examine Texas’ voter identification law before it’s put into place in November.

PolitiFact Texas has checked related claims including Holder’s statement last year in Houston that 25 percent of African Americans don’t have a government-issued voter ID.

We’ve put Texas attorney general Greg Abbott put to the Truth-O-Meter for a claim about the number of voter fraud cases his office had investigated and for his statement that 200 dead people voted in Texas’ May 2012 primaries.

And we’ve learned how U.S. Rep. Barbara Jordan, D-Houston, the first black congresswoman elected from the South, was instrumental in getting Texas under the Voting Rights Act in 1975, not 1965.

Click the links at right for more, including whether Gov. Rick Perry was right to say photo ID was required to purchase Sudafed in Texas.
