Julián Castro’s national moment

We don’t know if Julián Castro will make anyone tear up as little-known Barack Obama of Illinois did in 2004.

But we’ll be listening for factually curious claims from the youthful San Antonio mayor as he delivers Tuesday night’s keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. (Obama, then a state senator just-nominated to the U.S. Senate, gave the well-received keynote at the ‘04 convention in Boston.)

Four years ago, Castro quietly palled around Denver, site of the Democratic convention, with his twin brother, state Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio. This reporter ate a close to leisurely fast-food lunch with the duo.

At least momentarily, they had nothing better to do.

Things change.

Julián Castro won his first term as mayor in 2009, his second in 2011. He then gave the keynote at the Texas Democratic Party’s June 2012 convention before being announced as the national convention’s keynoter on July 31, 2012.
