Obama’s record on the Truth-O-Meter

By W. Gardner Selby
July 17, 2012

President Barack Obama, who’s making a rare swing through Austin, often figures into our fact checks.

We’ve posted some of our checks relating to Obama to the right, including ridiculous claims about where Obama wasn’t born and that he’s a socialist. Our sampling also includes our looks into statements about Obama by Republicans such as Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz, who faces Dewhurst in a July 31 runoff for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination.

A note: We don’t often get to check claims directly made by the Democratic president — though there is a stimulus-related one here — because we focus on political figures from Texas or on those who make statements related to Texas.

Of course, PolitiFact in Washington keeps a close eye on Obama. We recommend peeks at Obama’s PolitiFact “report card,” encompassing more than 300 Obama statements and the Obameter, which tracks progress (or not) on his campaign promises.

Finally, if you notice the president saying something during his Texas trip that merits review, let us know at politifact@statesman.com . We’re also on Facebook and Twitter.
