Roger Williams and pancakes for yuppies in Washington

U.S. House hopeful Roger Williams, in a July 31, 2012, Republican primary runoff with Wes Riddle, vows to battle wasteful spending.

A reader wondered if each of the examples in a recent Williams’ campaign mailer holds up.

We chomped on his claim that $765,828 in federal aid subsidized “pancakes for yuppies” in the nation’s capital.

That turned out to be Half True. Such money flowed toward opening an IHOP in the gentrifying Columbia Heights section of Washington. But the grant wasn’t given to subsidize yuppie breakfasts. Unsaid in the mailer, the aid enabled dozens of down-and-out residents to gain jobs.
