Romney, Obama and NALEO

By W. Gardner Selby
June 21, 2012

It’s NALEO week for Mitt Romney and Barack Obama.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee spoke to the group — the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials — on June 21, 2012. The Democratic president was scheduled to make his pitch a day later.

We’re reminded of a claim that led us to check facts with NALEO officials.

Rebecca Acuña, spokeswoman for the Texas Democratic Party, told the Texas Tribune for a March 3, 2012, news article that Republicans “are delusional if they think they’re making any inroads with Latinos. In Texas, there are 668 Democratic Hispanic elected officials to the 60 in the Republican Party.”

Do Hispanic Democratic elected officials so greatly outnumber their Latino Republican counterparts in Texas?

The 2011 NALEO directory includes figures suggesting that Latino elected Democrats in Texas greatly outnumber Republican counterparts. However, we found, this claim lacked substantive context — that NALEO did not determine the party memberships of most Latino Texas officeholders. If this were done, the Democratic-Republican ratio might change.

We rated the claim Mostly True. See our article to the right.
