Charlie Baird, Rosemary Lehmerg, the Truth-O-Meter

By W. Gardner Selby
April 3, 2012

The Truth-O-Meter ticked to Mostly False on separate campaign claims by Democratic candidates for Travis County district attorney.

Charlie Baird, a former judge challenging incumbent Rosemary Lehmberg, said in a leaflet that the DA’s office has had the same leadership for 30 years, while Lehmberg, in a campaign video, laid claim to a statewide “first.”

By Baird’s methodology, one could stretch to say the office has had the same leadership for about 15 years, which would count three-plus years Lehmberg has been district attorney and the dozen previous years that she was the first assistant DA to District Attorney Ronnie Earle, who had the top job for 32 years.

Lehmberg said in her video that she created the state’s first felony deferred prosecution program for nonviolent first-offenders. However, two other counties have similar programs — and one started a few years before Travis County launched.

See our detailed checks to the right. Meantime, if you hear or spot a questionable claim — by any candidate in any Texas race — feel free to nudge us at politifact@statesman.com. Remember too that you can sound off on our work on our Facebook page.
