Progress, and a setback, for GOP health care promises

By Angie Drobnic Holan
March 17, 2011

A cornerstone of Republican campaigns in the fall was the promise to repeal the Democrats’ health care law, which the Republicans often refer to as ObamaCare. We’ve been keeping tabs on the individual promises and are updating them on our GOP Pledge-O-Meter.

GOP leaders not only made a sweeping promise of repealing the health care law, they added some more modest pledges in case the sweeping one didn’t pass.

And indeed, with Democrats still in control of the Senate, the complete repeal has passed the House but is unlikely to pass the Senate. So we’re changing our rating to Stalled.

Meanwhile, the Republican contingency efforts are taking shape. The Republicans are seeking to deny funding for implementation of the health care law and repeal a mandate in the law that requires small businesses to tell the IRS about any purchases over $600. We’re now rating both of them In the Works.
