Checking Joe Biden’s claims on ABC’s ‘This Week’

By Martha M. Hamilton
July 20, 2010

Vice President Joe Biden had a lot to say on This Week on July 18, 2010. And that gave us plenty of facts to check.

First there was his assertion that “we”re not engaged in nation building” in Afghanistan. He was correct that the administration doesn”t use that phrase and that U.S. military intentions in Afghanistan are limited. Still, the U.S. is engaged in activities there associated with what once was called “nation building,” so we rated it Half True.

Next we moved on to Biden”s claim that public support was growing for the Obama health care plan and that the “health care numbers are going up,” When we checked the polls, we found the numbers had moved up and down — but not very much. We rated it Barely True.

We”ve got one more Biden item that we hope to post soon.
