A Republican-controlled House voted in 2023 to remove U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., from her post on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Two years later, it’s purportedly happening again.

“Breaking news: Rep. Ilhan Omar has been removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee,” a Feb. 19 Instagram post said.

It showed a C-SPAN clip reflecting that 218 Republicans had voted to oust Omar from the committee, while 211 Democrats voted against dispatching her.

But the clip is old and so is this news, which doesn’t merit the badge of “breaking.”

On Feb. 2, 2023, the House debated and voted 218-211 in favor of a Republican resolution to remove Omar over remarks she made about Israel.

Rep. Max Miller, R-Ohio, introduced the resolution, which said Omar “disqualified herself from serving on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, a panel that is viewed by nations around the world as speaking for Congress on matters of international importance and national security.”

The resolution followed bipartisan criticism Omar faced in 2019 for what some perceived as antisemitic comments. She apologized at the time for a tweet she wrote that said support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins,” referring to hundred-dollar bills.

In 2024, another “breaking” news claim circulated online, saying that Omar had been removed from the committee. But those rumors also recycled the 2023 news.

Claims it happened in 2024, and in 2025, are wrong. We rate them False.

Truth-o-meter Ruling

False
