No, Fulton County, Georgia, DA Fani Willis wasn’t disbarred

If your time is short

  • Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis hasn’t been disbarred, though U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., recently requested that the state bar association do so.
See the sources for this fact-check

Fani Willis, the Fulton County district attorney in Georgia who is the main prosecutor in an election interference case against former President Donald Trump there, has not been disbarred.

You probably wouldn’t know that if you read — and believed — a recent Facebook post.

“‘Disbarment!’ — DA Fani Willis gets brutal news in case against Trump,” read the text above an image of Willis in a March 21 post

It was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., appealed to the State Bar of Georgia on March 20 after a superior court judge ruled that Willis’ relationship with a special prosecutor had created an appearance of impropriety, Bloomberg News reported

The publication reviewed the complaint Greene filed with the bar association. It said: “I am requesting an investigation of Fani Willis, her suspension and her disbarment.”

Anyone can file a grievance against a lawyer under Georgia law, and proceedings are confidential, “so any decision by the Georgia State Bar to investigate or to drop Greene’s complaint wouldn’t be made public,” Bloomberg News said.

The Georgia Supreme Court ultimately decides public discipline of attorneys, and disbarment happens “in only the most serious cases,” the publication said.

But Willis hasn’t been disbarred, and this Facebook post could leave people with that impression.

We rate claims that she has been disbarred False.
