Conspiracy theories about the Titan submersible that went missing en route to the wreckage of the Titanic have proliferated online since the U.S. Coast Guard said June 28 that all five of its passengers were presumed dead.

Among the unfounded claims: that the passengers faked their own deaths.

A recent Instagram post suggests that even U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Ga., weighed in, saying: “How can the Titanic submersible run out of air if you breathe both in and out? I feel like this is more fake news BS.”

The supposed quote attracted some high-profile attention: “Oh bless her tiny little mind,” actor Sharon Stone commented.

The Instagram post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The same Instagram account also shared what looks like a screenshot of a tweet from Greene making the statement. The Twitter handle visible in the screenshot is @RepMTG_Press.

But searching Twitter for that account reveals it’s not actually from Greene’s press shop.

Its bio makes clear that it’s a parody account.

Searching for news reports or other sources corroborating that Greene actually made such a statement, we found none.

We also found no evidence that Greene’s authentic Twitter accounts shared posts of this nature.

We rate claims that Greene made this statement about the Titan submersible Pants on Fire!
