Old video of Trump on the 2016 campaign trail misleads today’s social media users

If your time is short

  • This video is from 2016.

Following his indictment on dozens of charges related to the unauthorized possession of federal documents, former President Donald Trump has criticized how his 2016 election opponent handled classified material.

But a video shared June 13 on Facebook doesn’t show his recent remarks about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, even though the post would have you think otherwise.

“BAM,” it says. “TRUMP JUST ATTACKED THE CLINTONS IN THE WORST WAY IMAGINABLE LISTEN TO WHAT HE JUST SAID.”

This post was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.)

The video in the post shows a clip of an October 2016 speech Trump made, when he and Clinton were vying for the presidency.

It shows Trump saying “the Clintons are criminals” and claiming that “the establishment that protects them has engaged in a massive cover-up of widespread criminal activity at the State Department and the Clinton Foundation only to keep the Clintons in power.”

Trump is just as critical of the Clintons today as he was in 2016, and we’ve dug into the differences between his and Hillary Clinton’s classified document cases.

But these video remarks are old. He didn’t “just” say them, as the post claims.

We rate it False.
