Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, was elected governor of Michigan in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. She gave the Democratic response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union in 2020. She was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2000 and elected to the Michigan State Senate in 2006 where she served as the Senate Democratic Leader.
